This week our theme was ‘Wimbledon’.
The children have learnt about what sport is played at Wimbledon, London the city it is played in and the traditions Wimbledon has, such as eating strawberries! This all builds the children’s understanding of the world around them. There have been lots of fun activities to embed this learning which have included the following:-
Handling different sports equipment used for badminton, tennis, hockey, rounders, baseball, cricket, squash and football. This has introduced the children to new language, new sports and given them the opportunity to notice differences between the equipment such as size and colour.
They have each made a cardboard tennis racquet and have been practising their hand-eye coordination using their new racquets with balloons on a tennis court marked out inside preschool – an activity that can be tried at home. The children have also had the tennis racquets out in the garden.
At snack time, the children have all had the opportunity to try ‘Wimbledon strawberries and cream’. The children were encouraged to cut their own strawberries to build fine motor skills ready for writing. Preparing their own food and eating together also encourages the children to try food that they might not usually want to try – the strawberries and cream went down very well!
One of the highlights of the week was the pretend trip to London. A bus was made out of chairs and drove the children to London. Once here, the children had to cross the river over ‘London Bridge’ (our song for the week) to get to the Palace. At the Palace they met the King and all gave him a bow!
