This half term we will be looking at signs of Spring, explaining about the changes that happen in Spring; we will talk about how the days will stay lighter, and what we can grow in the garden, how things start to bud, grow, and bloom, teaching the children that plants need water, light, warmth, soil, and compost to grow. Spring has the perfect conditions to help them to grow, where there are often more rain showers and sunlight compared to the cold winter.
The first day of Spring is March 20th. On this day the daylight hours and night hours are the same, so there will be 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness; this is because the sun shines over the equator, which is an imaginary line that divides the earth, halfway in between the North Pole and the South Pole.
We will be looking at Spring animals and how they become more active in Spring, rising from their winter sleep, migrating and breeding because it is warmer. The plants will grow and food will become more available for the animals. You may see bats flying around as they emerge from hibernation; they will be seen flitting around at dusk in the evenings as it becomes warmer, which brings out the tasty insects they like to feast on. Hedgehogs will also come out of their winter hideaways, looking around for food at night and giving birth to their young.
There are many special events taking place over the next few weeks!
Thursday 7th March - World Book Day
We are going to be doing Goldilocks and the Three Bears and will have lots of different activities for the children based around the story, such as making porridge, acting out the story, a colouring competition and much more. Please send your child dressed up on the day in their favourite costume (any costume, please don’t go out and buy one specially). Please also bring their favourite book with them and we will try to get round to reading them all with the children.
Sunday 10th March - Mother’s Day
The children will be busy making cards and crafts for their Mum’s for their special day.
Wednesday 13th March - Mini Farm
We have been lucky enough to secure a visit from a mini farm at 10.30am-11.30am. This will be available to ALL children, not just the Wednesday children, at a cost of £8.00 per child. This is a great opportunity for the children to see lots of animals at preschool including Valais Blacknose lambs, Pygmy goats, Silkie chickens and French lop bunnies.
For the last two weeks of this half term, we will be very busy making Easter crafts to take home for our families. We will also be having an Easter egg hunt, doing some egg decorating and egg racing, rolling them down the hill at preschool (let's see whose egg survives).
Saturday 23rd March - 1.00pm-3.00pm
Please come and support our Easter Fayre which will be at Winterley Methodist Church, next to preschool. There will be an Easter bonnet parade at 2.30pm with a prize for the best dressed, various stalls, cream teas, glitter tattoos and much more! It would be lovely to see as many families as possible supporting this event and doing some fundraising for the preschool. Please spread the word around all your friends.
Thursday 28th March will be the last day of this term, when we will break up for the Easter holidays. We hope you enjoy the break and eat lots of chocolate; I hope the Easter bunny comes to visit you all.
