This week we have been learning all about road safety and how to keep safe when crossing the road.
The children painted a giant zebra crossing. This was then used for all the children to stop, look and listen before crossing a pretend road to get outside to play! All the children did really well with this activity, taking turns and listening to the instructions. The zebra crossing was then used outside, for the children’s own games using the ride on vehicles. To enhance this play further, road signs and traffic lights were used. Introducing traffic lights to the play taught colour recognition to the younger children. Using ‘green go’ and ‘red stop’ signs helped the older children with their early literacy skills as they begin to recognise letters.
On Wednesday, when the children were unable to get outside due to the heavy rain, the children learnt how to stay safe in the dark. We switched off the preschool lights and the children put on high visibility jackets and used torches to make them visible to traffic on the pretend road. They then held hands with their friends to cross the pretend road safely using the zebra crossing.
To reinforce the children’s learning on road safety, lots of other activities were available to the children throughout the week. This included play dough with road signs in to prompt language and communication development and small world play with Happy Land roads and people for imaginative play.
This week’s rhymes for the two year olds was ‘The Traffic Jam song’ and for the three and four year olds it was ‘The Safety Belt song’. The children should be able to tell you all about their learning and sing their rhymes to you.
