Remembrance Day and Beauty & The Beast

This week the children have been learning all about Remembrance Day and the traditional tale of Beauty and the Beast.

For Remembrance Day, we explained to the children that today was the day we remembered those who over the years, had fought for our country and that we wear poppies in their honour. We watched a film on CBeebies titled “Poppies” which is a Remembrance Day 2 Minutes' Silence alternative for children. Then at 11 am on the 11th November we played The Last Post and the children did amazingly well sitting for 2 minutes (mainly) in silence. The children then all made a poppy to take home.

The Beauty and the Beast story was told many times this week, with the emphasis being about kindness. We created a kindness tree which is shown in the photo below, whereby every kind act a child did this week, such as sharing, helping others etc., was written on a pink heart and placed on the tree. The three children with the most hearts on the tree at the end of the week were given a book to take home to keep.

The children also really enjoyed dressing up in costumes, and dancing to the tune from Beauty & the Beast - A Tale As Old As Time. They kept asking for it to be played again, and again and again and they would dance together holding hands like in the film.

The children also enjoyed creating a picture of the flower in the glass jar from their handprint, (which was the flower), then they painted the stem and leaves and the falling petals from the flower to create the image.

Lastly, through performing a shadow puppet show for the children, the story of Beauty and the Beast was portrayed.
