Planets

This week the children have been learning all about planets through fun activities designed to grow their understanding of the world around them.

We have had lots of chance for the children to use their imagination including a trip to space. Children were encouraged to use their imagination and got to ‘take-off’ in a rocket from planet Earth (the main room) and land in space (the dark office) where they were able to use telescopes they had made to look at the stars and planets being projected onto the ceiling.

Our story for the week ‘Whatever Next’ by Jill Murphy, which is about a bear who goes to the moon, also captured the children’s imagination with all the children keen to be the bear as the story was read out! Bringing the story to life with props and the children taking part encourages the children's love of reading and develops their communication and language skills.

‘Five Little Men in a Flying Saucer’ was a very popular rhyme this week with the children picking up the words and actions very quickly. It was also a chance to build on their counting skills.

The children were able to think creatively through playing with space playdough (black playdough with gold stars and glitter in). They were able to use cutters to cut out stars and we had planets on sticks for the children to make their own universes. As well as being a great sensory experience the squeezing, pinching and shaping movements help strengthen children’s hand muscles and develop their fine motor skills ready for writing.
