This week our theme has been Jack and the Beanstalk. The children have been climbing up our beanstalk as silently as possible so they could take the sleeping giant's treasure. At first some of the children were unsure of the loud "fe fi fo fum" from the waking giant, but by the end of the week everyone was happy to climb the beanstalk and many of the children joined the giant for a nap.
We have used the beanstalk theme to explore growing. The children have watched a time-lapse of a bean growing so they could see what would happen to the bean they have taken home to grow. We have been learning about the things a plant needs to grow and the children have grown from our pretend soil helped by children providing sun and rain. Our tuff tray has been filled with nesting materials and golden eggs; unfortunately we didn’t manage to hatch a hen that could lay us some more.
Rhyme time saw us practicing jumping over candlesticks so Jack could be nimble and quick ready to climb the beanstalk.
If you would like to explore the growing theme at home with your children you could try growing carrot tops. If you have a rabbit or Guinea pig they will love the leaves that sprout, or try sprouting some mung beans from the health food shop and make yourself a Chinese. Happy growing!
