This week the children have been learning all about the different types of homes people live in such as houses, bungalows and flats and even boat houses. The children enjoyed passing around pictures of each others houses and guessing who lived where. The children made their own house pictures using shapes. Houses were also drawn in chalk outside – at one point we had a whole street with all the children becoming neighbours and going to visit each other.
We have been closely watching the demolition of the house next door and talking about what the children can see happening as different rooms in the building came down. The children have especially enjoyed seeing the big machinery.
Our book for the week was ‘The Three Little Pigs’. The children have been able to make their own houses of straw, sticks and bricks and ‘huff and puff and blow them all down’. This has been especially good for their imaginative play. The children each painted ‘pig masks’ and on Friday were able to act out the story together, which was great fun, but also aims to encourage their love of reading by making the story memorable.
The week was finished off with a walk around Winterley to visit the park and feed the ducks. This was to point out different buildings to the children, starting with the Methodist Church, and to see what other types of buildings the children could find.
