Hot cross buns, hot cross buns, one a penny, two a penny, hot cross buns!

Each week at The Goslings the children learn a new rhyme. This week's rhyme is “Hot cross buns”. The children have been tasting hot cross buns, making the rhyme more real to them and providing a taste experience.

Talking about what they taste like and what’s in them gives the children new words and an opportunity for conversation, which is so important in early language development. Playing “five hot cross buns in a baker's shop” gives an opportunity for counting and number recognition. Making their own play dough hot cross buns, crushing cinnamon sticks and fruit peel strengthens hand muscles and rolling, and cutting and placing a cross helps with fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

As you can see, a little rhyme can go a long way . If you would like to make play dough with your child, this is the recipe we use:

  • 1 cup of flour

  • 1 cup of water

  • 1/2 cup of salt

  • 2 tblsp oil

  • 2 tsp cream of tartar

  • A few drops of food colouring

  • Combine everything in a pan and mix.

  • Heat until it leaves the sides of the pan and holds together, then cook and kneed.

  • Have fun then store in an airtight container!
