Bonfire Night and The Gingerbread Man

This week the children have been learning about bonfire night and the traditional tale of ‘The Gingerbread Man’.

In the setting we made a pretend bonfire. The children helped to build the bonfire then sat around it and toasted marshmallows and sang the fireworks song learnt during Tuesday’s music lesson. Many of the children had been to a fireworks display over the weekend and this activity enabled the children to talk about the bonfires and fireworks that they had seen. We also talked to the children about how to stay safe at bonfires.

The story of The Gingerbread Man was really popular with the children and a great way to develop early literacy. The children took it in turns to be the different characters as the story was read out – the gingerbread man, the little old lady, the little old man, the pig, the cow, the horse and the fox. Not surprisingly, the most popular characters were the gingerbread man and the fox!

The children made play dough gingerbread men and cooked them in the toy oven. They designed their own gingerbread men from different craft materials and had a gingerbread man to eat at snack time. Including lots of play opportunities around this theme embeds the children’s knowledge of the story. See if your child can tell you the story or answer simple questions such as ‘who ate the gingerbread man?’

Our songs for the week were ‘5 Little Gingerbread men’ for the three and four year old children and ‘Run run as fast as you can, you can’t catch me I am the gingerbread man' for the two year old children. ‘5 Little Gingerbread Men’ not only gave the children the chance to learn a new song and new words but an extension activity was set up with baking trays labelled 1-5 and gingerbread men labelled 1-5 and the children took turns to match the correct gingerbread man to the correct baking tray. For the two year old children, their song focused on physical development and running on the spot whilst singing.

The busy week was finished of with a trip to feed the pigs pumpkins.
